Earlier this summer Governor Phil Scott announced the creation of a “Climate Action Commission” a group of 21 stakeholders and government officials tasked with making three climate action recommendations before the end of the year for the legislature and governor to work toward enacting next session.

The governor’s order requires that the recommendations “spur economic activity, inspire and grow Vermont businesses, and put Vermonters on a path to affordability.”

Well, all of us in the Energy Independent Vermont coalition know of a step we can take that does exactly that: It’s time for Vermont to put a price on the polluting fuels that the gas and oil giants are bringing into our state and put that money in Vermonters’ hands so they can transition to affordable, efficient clean energy. It’s time to put a price on carbon pollution.

The Climate Action Commission is holding four “public scoping” sessions across the state to get Vermonters’ input on the actions they should be recommending. We have to show up to these meetings and make it clear that a price on carbon pollution has to be among the commission’s recommendations.
